About

The Cricket Attic is the brainchild of Greg Lansdowne, a sports writer and communications professional.

"Inspired by the outstanding efforts of Chris Oakley and Rich Johnson on The Football Attic, and having got to know them through contributing a couple of articles as well as appearing on their podcast, I pitched the idea of a sister site - The Cricket Attic.

They liked the concept and very kindly built a platform to house it in 2015.

At that point, I reached the conclusion that the competing attentions of young children meant it wasn't the right time to commit to such a project!

Fortunately nostalgia never goes out of fashion so now that my kids are becoming a little more responsible it is time to get back in the retro cricket saddle!

The Cricket Attic will focus on the 1970s to the 1990s - earlier eras are already well catered for online - and will continue in the spirit of The Football Attic, concentrating as much on what went on around the game rather than in the middle (though few aspects will be ignored in the long run).

Many thanks to Chris and Rich for building the original version of The Cricket Attic and to Chris for doing it all again in 2020 – my debt to you is huge.

Please get in touch if you want to discuss anything written on the site - or have a special request for a future post - as The Cricket Attic is nothing without you.

"See you in the pavilion."

Update: Following the success of my 'Essex Retro Football Show' (first event was held in September 2023) a 'Retro Cricket Show' will take place in the summer of 2024. Check back here plus the @CricketAttic Twitter/X feed for updates.

About Greg Lansdowne

Alongside parallel careers in the football/business/collectables sectors, my writing/PR work in professional cricket has included six years as Essex County Cricket Club Communications Manager, 11 years as Editor of the Essex CCC Yearbook (as well as Editor of the Matchday Programme, Members’ Magazine and Webmaster) and co-author of ’60 Classic Essex Matches’. Ad hoc PR/comms support was also provided to various Essex CCC beneficiaries including Paul Grayson, Ashley Cowan, James Foster, Graham Napier, Ryan ten Doeschate and Ravi Bopara.

I published my own cricket magazine, Big Hitter (focusing on Asian cricket), for two years; worked as a freelance writer for the ICC for 10 years (including chief reporter for the ICC website on the 2009 and 2012 World T20 tournaments); covered the IPL as a sub-editor for the official website; contributed articles to Backspin, The Wisden Cricketer, Cricket365 and Yahoo Cricket.

I was also PR Advisor to collectables company Tap'n'Play for their England Cricket trading card launches in 2018-19 and have more recently provided nostalgia content for the Essex Cricket website.

In 2023 I successfully launched the Essex Retro Football Show and will be hosting a Retro Cricket Show in 2024.
