If Billy Joel had been into cricket, and born in York rather
than New York, his 1989 classic
'We didn't start the fire' would have sounded a whole lot different...and none
the poorer for it:
"Peter West, Graham Dilley, Clive Lloyd, Peter Willey
Sunday League, Dice Cricket, Ceefax on the go
"Test Match, Wisden, Ian Botham, Richards' ton
Kerry Packer, Ali Bacher, England batting woe..."
You get the drift!
For those of you who loved the fine work of The Football Attic over the years,
this will be run along similar lines - focusing a little more on the nostalgia
of cricket ephemera rather than what went off on the pitch (Fred Trueman, for
one, often couldn't believe what he was seeing, so far be it from me to think I
can do any better).
Don't hold me to that (I'm sure I'll slip in a few interviews with past players
at some point). But, in general, if you followed cricket during the 1970s to
1990s and fondly remember the TV coverage, browsing the latest scores on
teletext, collecting the Panini stickers, reading the magazines/books, longing
to sport the coloured clothing, playing 'Graham Gooch's Test Cricket' or 'Test
Match'...there may be something of interest on this blog.
Anyone who fancies turning their own arm over, to provide some cricketing memories, is more than welcome to join in. I'll also be keeping the @CricketAttic Twitter feed updated with nostalgia and whimsy from a time when live televised cricket was available to all and 160 from 40 overs was a challenging target.
If this blog can do for cricket nostalgia what The Football Attic achieved over many years for football - and I can also finish my Panini 'World of Cricket 83' album to boot - it will all have been worth it!
